Carbon fiber powder (also known as ground carbon fiber) is widely used in fields such as conductive coatings, anti-static flooring, electromagnetic shielding materials, and high-strength composite material fillers. As a purchaser, what you care about is not only the fineness of the powder, but also the stability of its purity, the uniformity of particle size distribution, and the bonding effect with the base material. Below, from the production perspective, we will introduce how we control these two aspects.
I. Raw Material Selection and Grinding Process
The performance of Carbon fiber powder primarily depends on the quality of the carbon fiber raw materials used and the control of the grinding and classification processes.
Stable raw material sources: We select high-quality carbon fiber raw materials (such as T300 grade, T700 grade, etc.). After different batches arrive at the factory, they are first inspected for appearance and basic performance to ensure consistency among different batches. We do not randomly change the raw material sources to maintain product stability.
Shredding and grading control: According to the required fineness (mesh size) and particle size distribution specified by the customer, a multi-stage shredding and precise grading process is adopted. Surface treatment (as per requirements): Some carbon fiber powder will undergo surface activation or sizing treatment based on the customer's matrix material (such as epoxy, nylon, polypropylene, etc.) to enhance the bonding strength with the matrix. We will match the corresponding surface treatment solution according to your specific application.
It should be noted that the electrical conductivity of carbon fiber powder is related to its particle size distribution, aspect ratio, and graphiteification degree. When purchasing, it is recommended to clearly specify the main application purpose, which could be for conductivity, reinforcement, or wear resistance, so as to select the appropriate specifications.
II. Process Inspection and Batch Management
Carbon fiber powder is a type of functional filler. The stability of indicators such as fineness, purity, and ash content among different batches directly affects the performance consistency of the downstream products.
Online monitoring and process sampling: During the production process, continuous monitoring of the crushing and classification parameters is carried out. At the same time, samples are taken regularly to test the particle size distribution, the content of adhesive (starch paste content), ash content, etc. Any fluctuations are promptly adjusted to ensure the stability of the semi-finished product quality.
Metal impurity control: If metal particles are mixed into carbon fiber powder, it may affect the insulation performance of conductive coatings or electromagnetic shielding materials, or cause surface defects on the coating. We reduce the residual of metal impurities through multiple magnetic separation and screening processes. Metal impurity inspections will be conducted before each batch of shipment.
Batch retention samples and traceability: Samples (including particle size distribution test records) are retained for each batch of carbon fiber powder, with the production date and process parameters marked. Before the next batch of production, a comparison of particle size, color and feel will be conducted with the retention samples from the previous batch to ensure no significant changes.

Confirm fineness and specifications: Provide the target mesh size or the range of particle size distribution (such as D50, D90 values), and indicate whether sizing treatment is required.
Sample testing verification: Conduct small-scale mixing tests in your formulation system to observe the uniformity of dispersion, the conductive/enhancing effect, and the impact on processing techniques (such as spraying, casting).
