In terms of products, China's high-performance carbon fibers are basically in blank. At present, there are only products equivalent to or inferior to T300 carbon fiber in China, T700 carbon fiber is still in the engineering research stage, and T800 and MJ series carbon fiber are still under research, and the grades and specifications single. At present, domestic 3K (3000 bundles each) and 12k T300 grade carbon fiber are the main products. The foreign single-line production capacity has reached 1,800 tons (12k) and the production efficiency is high. In contrast, there are large gaps in China's production technology and equipment scale. As a result, the cost varies greatly, resulting in a lack of market competitiveness for China's carbon fiber products.
Compared to the development of some outdated technologies, the construction of carbon fiber production lines is booming. At present, there are nearly 30 carbon fiber production enterprises in China with a planned production capacity of 70,000-80,000 tons/year. In addition to private enterprises, large state-owned enterprises such as PetroChina, Sinopec, China Chemical, China Steel, China Building Materials, and Shougang have all stepped in.
On the one hand, investment is so hot that companies are optimistic about the carbon fiber market prospects. The future growth of the carbon fiber market will increase significantly in emerging industries such as wind turbine blades, construction materials, automobiles, large aircrafts, pressure vessels, and high-voltage power lines. Hundreds of thousands of tons may also be insufficient. But on the other hand, some places blindly follow suit.
The technical foundation of the carbon fiber industry has not yet been laid, and it is naturally difficult to convert production capacity into production. At present, there are several domestic carbon fiber companies with high technological levels. However, due to the lack of scale advantages, the prices of the same quality products are much higher than those of foreign countries. It is understood that the cost of Toray T700 grade carbon fiber is equivalent to the cost of domestic T300 grade.
The Western countries regard carbon fiber as a strategic material and have banned and embargoed China, making it impossible to transfer technology. In the 1980s, China had introduced large tow pre-oxidation furnaces and carbonization furnaces from the British RK Corporation. As a result, both sets of equipment failed to operate normally. Practice has proved that it is impossible for a high-tech carbon fiber company to transfer technology or sell equipment to China from a national or commercial perspective. However, the market for high-performance fiber and composite materials will be further transferred to Asia, and the prospects of China's high-performance carbon fiber composite materials industry are inestimable.
