How can the strength and consistency of aerospace-grade chopped carbon fibers be guaranteed?
Raw materials and process control
The aerospace industry has stringent requirements for the performance stability of chopped carbon fibers. Quality control begins at the raw filament stage. We prefer to use carbon fiber raw filaments that are suitable for high-end applications. After entering the warehouse, basic performance screening is conducted to eliminate raw filaments with defects or abnormal appearance. The internal structure of the raw filaments and the surface sizing system directly affect the strength of the individual fibers and the interfacial bonding force. The sizing agent formula needs to match the resin matrix to avoid interface delamination during subsequent composites processing, which could lead to strength loss.
The cutting process is a key环节 for consistency control. The cutting mechanism and wire feeding tension of the equipment need to be stably controlled to ensure uniform length for each batch of fibers, reducing the occurrence of mixed lengths, stray fibers, and broken fibers. At the same time, strict control of friction and compression damage during the processing is necessary to prevent micro-cracks from forming on the surface of the individual fibers. Such hidden damages will directly reduce the strength of the fibers. After cutting, dust removal and impurity removal should be carried out to prevent impurities from entering the system.
Post-processing and full-process inspection
The post-processing and sorting steps after cutting further screen out non-conforming products. Through graded screening, remove loose clusters, tangled fibers, and damaged individual fibers to ensure uniform fiber conditions within each batch. The production process should maintain stable environmental conditions to reduce changes in the sizing layer caused by temperature and humidity fluctuations and prevent fiber moisture absorption, contamination.
Establish a full-batch sampling inspection mechanism, not only testing static strength indicators, but also paying attention to dispersion. Sampling at multiple points covers different positions of the entire batch of materials to avoid misjudgment caused by single-point sampling. In addition to the fiber's own properties, the performance of the composite sample after mixing with the matrix should also be evaluated to verify the dispersion effect of the fibers within the composite material. Inhomogeneous dispersion will directly lead to a decrease in the mechanical consistency of the finished product.
Moreover, a batch traceability system is indispensable. Each batch of raw materials, processing parameters, and inspection records should be archived. Once there is a performance fluctuation, the abnormal link can be quickly located. Throughout the production, packaging, and storage processes, protective measures should be taken to isolate light, moisture, and oil stains to prevent fiber performance degradation during storage.
There is no simplified control plan for aerospace-grade chopped carbon fibers. It relies on source selection, stable processes, strict sorting, continuous sampling, and traceability management to stably guarantee strength and batch consistency. It is recommended to conduct small-scale trial production and verification before formal production.
