Short-cut carbon fibers: The basic material unit for reinforcement modification

Short-cut carbon fibers are specific-length fiber segments obtained by mechanical cutting of continuous carbon fibers. In the field of composite materials, they serve as reinforcement modification components, being dispersed in various matrix materials in a dispersed phase form to improve the mechanical properties, heat resistance, and dimensional stability of the matrix. Their applications span multiple systems such as thermoplastic resins, thermosetting resins, rubber, and cement-based materials, and are an industrial basic-level reinforcement material.

The performance foundation of short-cut carbon fibers stems from the inherent properties of their raw material - carbon fibers, which possess high strength, high modulus, and low density. In the short-cut form, the original continuity of the fibers is interrupted, but their axial mechanical properties are retained. When uniformly dispersed in the matrix material, these short fibers can bear the loads transferred from the matrix, through the interaction at the fiber-bond interface, enhancing the overall resistance of the composite material to external force damage. Due to the superior thermal and electrical conductivity of carbon fibers compared to most polymer matrices, the addition of short-cut carbon fibers can also improve the thermal conductivity and anti-static properties of the composite material to a certain extent.

From the perspective of production processes, the preparation of Short-cut carbon fibers mainly includes three steps: carbonization of the raw filament, surface treatment, and fixed-length cutting. Among them, surface treatment is the key process that affects the downstream application effect. Carbon fibers with appropriate surface treatment have a higher activity and can form stronger interface bonding with the matrix resin. The strength of this bonding directly relates to whether stress can be effectively transferred to the fibers and is one of the core factors determining the enhancement efficiency. The cutting process determines the fiber length according to customer requirements, and the requirements for fiber length vary depending on the type of matrix and molding process, usually selected based on specific applications.

At the application level, short-cut carbon fibers are mainly used as functional fillers. In the modification of engineering plastics, when mixed with thermoplastic resins such as nylon, polypropylene, polycarbonate, and polyetheretherketone, it can enhance the rigidity and creep resistance of the material, used for manufacturing structural and functional components that can withstand certain loads; in thermosetting composite materials, it participates in the preparation of products requiring high strength and modulus; in coating and adhesive fields, an appropriate addition helps to improve the wear resistance and crack resistance of the coating, as well as the bearing capacity of the adhesive bonding layer; in cement-based materials, it is used to control crack development and enhance impact resistance. Short-cut carbon fibers can also be used in the preparation of conductive and heat-conductive functional materials.

It should be noted that the reinforcing effect of short-cut carbon fibers is closely related to fiber length, addition ratio, uniformity of dispersion, and the interface bonding state with the matrix. Different matrix systems, molding processes, and application conditions have different requirements for the surface treatment state, fiber length selection, and addition methods. Therefore, the selection of short-cut carbon fibers needs to be adapted to the actual process conditions.

In summary, short-cut carbon fibers are a clearly defined and mature reinforcement modification material. Based on the inherent properties of carbon fibers, through appropriate surface treatment and cutting processing, they serve a wide range of composite material applications. The selection of short-cut carbon fibers is based on a rational assessment of material reinforcement requirements and process compatibility, rather than pursuing conceptual gimmicks. In situations where the rigidity and strength of the matrix material need to be enhanced, it is a reliable option that has been verified through long-term use.
